BBA honoured at the Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards

The firm was awarded the Award of Excellence for its Meliadine Mine Cogeneration Plant project. Client: Agnico Eagle

This project involved Agnico Eagle searching for an efficient, eco-friendly and cost-effective solution to power its Meliadine mine in Nunavut. It mandated the BBA team to design its 28 MW cogeneration plant, along with the thermal and electrical systems. The high-performance generators and the heat recovery system’s innovative design led to a total estimated energy efficiency of 80% and reduced diesel consumption by 4.5 million litres per year compared to conventional cogeneration plants.

Indeed, building in the Far North is complex in many ways. The extreme cold, with temperatures dropping to below 50°C, pushed BBA experts to design an exceptionally reliable electrical and thermal system, and they succeeded magnificently thanks to close collaboration with the Agnico Eagle project team.

Together, BBA and Agnico Eagle demonstrated that by going beyond engineering, not only can environmental awareness and performance go hand in hand, but they also have the power to bridge communities and create long-term value.
