The decarbonization plan will establish a roadmap with clear and specific emission-cutting strategies for each of IAMGOLD’s sites. The company operates the Essakane Mine in Burkina Faso, the Westwood Mine in Québec and the Côté Gold Mine in Ontario.
“Since carbon emissions aren’t bound by borders, our objective with IAMGOLD is to have a global impact,” explains Hugo Careau ‒ Senior Decarbonization Engineer at BBA. “We’ll start by determining where and how energy is used so we can then recommend engineering solutions that will help the company’s progress toward its decarbonization goals. It’s a unique and interesting project because we'll have to consider three mines operating in three very different environments.”
BBA’s contract also includes a major digitalization component. This will involve setting up an energy management information system at each mine site to measure and track energy use.
“Our plan is to make use of existing systems and build on them so we can be sure they provide accurate information about what’s happening on site,” says Jean-François Beaulieu, Director ‒ Automation and Operational Technology at BBA. “Once the decarbonization solutions are implemented, these tracking tools will provide feedback in real time.”
Tyson Clinton, Senior Director of Decarbonization at IAMGOLD commented: “We’re very excited to work on a plan that outlines clear and specific emission reduction strategies for our operations. BBA’s insights will enable us to identify the decarbonization pathway that will help us deliver on our broader emission reduction goals.”
“This project is perfectly aligned with our corporate values and reflects the efforts we’ve made over the past few years to consolidate our decarbonization services,” added Stéphane Charest, Vice-President ‒ Decarbonization, Energy and Chemicals Market at BBA. “We now have the in‑depth knowledge and experience needed to support organizations as they implement decarbonization strategies, covering everything from consulting to project execution.”
